One of the most common questions I get regarding underwater lights is "Should I go with surface mount or thru hulls." It makes sense to ask since it's counterintuitive to drill holes in your boat but hopefully this will help you decide.
Although at Aqua Lights we sell a variety of surface mounted underwater boat lighting, I want to talk about thru hull lighting. I also want to make clear upfront that the advantages I'm going to tell you about apply to our lights.
First and foremost is that our thru hull lights have the ability to be serviced while your boat is in the water. This is key. This is not a feature available from our competitors. There are two that I'm aware of that allow you to service light from within the boat but NOT while in the water. If I'm mistaken please feel free to correct me.
The advantage of being able to service your underwater lights while the your boat is still in the water is more than just the ability to replace a burned out bulb, although that is one, but it's the ability to change your mind as far as your lighting source. If you initially chose to install say, our AL100X Xenon light but a couple years later you decide you want Blue LED's, you simply replace the removable light cartridge from inside the boat all while still in the water. Your able to use the existing light housing.
Another scenario might be that you buy some LED's this year and next year because of advancing LED technology a significantly brighter LED comes out. Luckily because you bought our thru hull LED lights you can simply change out the cartridge and not the entire housing. Convenient and economical.
These are the main advantages. If you want to discuss what advantages would apply to your situation just let us know. Our knowledgable staff are ready to answer your questions before and after the sail, and remember, all our our products are made by us here in the USA.
Wishing you calm seas,
